Plaque results when certain types of bacteria normally found in the mouth together with food particles and minerals in the saliva, attach to the surface of the teeth and gums. As a result of the bacterial growth in the plaque, irritants are produced which cause inflammation and swelling of the gums known as gingivitis. This often results in tender, bleeding gums. If left untreated plaque can lead to tartar and over time can harden into a cement like material called calculus. Calculus can occur above and below the gum line, this happens when plaque becomes mineralized (hardens).
We use an ultrasonic scaler to remove the calculus and plaque build up. This creates a smooth, clean surface above and below the gum line. We then use a polish with a special compound that removes any rough surfaces created by the ultrasonic scaler. A cholrhexidine rinse is applies to help destroy harmful bacteria.
